“As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God” (Psalm 42:1). The psalmist was not writing from a mountaintop. He was discouraged, far from the house of God, and surrounded by voices asking, “Where is your God?”

Big idea

Spiritual thirst is not a sign that God has left you. It is an invitation to come back to Him.

Notes

  1. Name the dryness honestly. The psalmist talks to his own soul: “Why are you cast down, O my soul?” (v. 5). Faith does not pretend.
  2. Remember what God has done. He recalls leading the worship procession to the house of God (v. 4). Memory fuels hope.
  3. Put your hope in God, not in your feelings. “Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him” (v. 5). Feelings follow faith.

Reflect

  • Where does your soul feel dry right now?
  • What has God done in your life that you need to remember this week?
